Cold snap keeps drivers off the roads

Drivers appeared to heed the advice to stay off the roads over the weekend, with East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service reporting no major incidents in terms of Road Traffic Collisions.

Heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures meant that many stayed tucked up warm and safe inside.

ESFRS advises drivers to carry a shovel in their car during the snowy conditions, as well as warm clothing and a fully charged mobile phone. Remember that conditions may be worse en route than they are when you first set out.

In the current weather it is best to avoid unnecessary journeys. However, if your journey is unavoidable then take extra care when driving, keeping your speed low to allow for additional braking distances and difficulty in manoeuvring your vehicle, if confronted with an emergency situation.

Make sure your windscreen and windows are clear and fully defrosted and that your screen wash is topped up and not frozen and never leave your car running to defrost on its own.
