Fire at Lewes scrap yard


On 4th September at 10.37pm, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service received a call regarding a fire in a scrap yard in Greystone Quarry, Southerham, Lewes.

Two fire appliances from Lewes and the water carrier from Uckfield were immediately dispatched to the scene and on arrival, crews found a large developing fire involving an item of machinery within a building which had spread to an external pile of recycling material.

An additional four fire appliances were then dispatched from Preston Circus, Barcombe and Hove along with an Aerial Ladder Platform from Brighton and Command Unit from Bexhill. Crews used breathing apparatus, compressed air foam, one main jet and one hose reel to tackle the blaze.

At 11.50pm, a further two fire appliances were sent from Newhaven and Uckfield. The fire was brought under control by 01.46am.
