Vegetarian restaurant Terre a Terre was struck by fire in the early hours of this morning.
Two fire engines from Preston Circus were immediately sent to the restaurant in East Street, at 6.10am today (1st October) and remained there until 9am.
The emergency call was made by two eagle-eyed cleaners who spotted the blaze in the kitchen who self-evacuated and contacted East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
Brighton firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the fire with one hose reel jet and used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the building of smoke.
The kitchen area suffered severe smoke and fire damage. A clean-up operation will get underway.
Crew Commander Jon Lee said:
“It is quite a big restaurant with a large kitchen and firefighters had to make their way through a heavily smoke-logged large industrial kitchen to reach the seat of the fire.
“The early intervention from cleaners and the closed kitchen door prevented the fire spreading to the rest of the restaurant."
No-one was injured or evacuated and a full fire investigation is currently underway.
