On 28thNovember at 03.44, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service responded to a report of smoke issuing from a building on Upper Bedford Street, Kemp Town, Brighton.
A fire appliance from Roedean and a fire appliance and an Aerial Ladder Platform from Preston Circus were immediately dispatched. On arrival crews confirmed the two storey building was heavily smoke-logged.
A further appliance from Preston Circus was then sent to the scene and crews entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and used a thermal imaging camera to locate a casualty, who was rescued but sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Further fire appliances were sent from Hove, Newhaven and Lewes. At the height of the incident, eight pumping appliances were at the scene along with an Aerial Ladder Platform and supporting vehicles from the City and surrounding areas.
Crews used ten breathing apparatus, four main jets and compressed air foam systems to tackle the blaze. The fire was under control by 06.30.
No surrounding residential properties have been affected and the fire is currently being investigated.
