Major fire in St Leonards successfully extinguished

At 10.45am this morning (Friday November 16th) East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS) was alerted to a fire at the Hastings Hire Centre on Menzies Road, St Leonards on Sea. The first crew arrived at the four storey building within five minutes and further crews were immediately requested.

ESFRS sent ten appliances to the incident, crewed by firefighters from Hastings Bohemia Road, Hastings The Ridge, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Lewes, Herstmonceux and Pevensey. Fire cover in Hastings and the surrounding area was unaffected.

Sussex Police and the ambulance service also attended. One person was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, one person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and two people received precautionary checks at the scene.

The fire was surrounded by firefighters to tackle the blaze and declared as out at 1.21pm. The building has been searched extensively and all people have been accounted for.

Nigel Cusack, ESFRS Borough Commander for Hastings, said:

“I’d like to commend the firefighters for their efforts, particularly those from Hastings Bohemia Road, quickly supported by colleagues from The Ridge, who were the first on the scene within five minutes and who did a fantastic job containing the fire before support appliances arrived from across the county. Crews also rescued a person who was still within the building, who had to be taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

“All of the crews also did an excellent job to prevent the fire from spreading any more extensively.”

The cause of the fire at this stage is unknown and a fire investigation is being carried out.
