The public is being urged to be extra vigilant as members of the Fire Brigades Union go on strike at the same time as planned fireworks events across East Sussex.
The celebrations in Hastings, Seaford, Hailsham and Lewes (Nevill Junior Bonfire Society) take place on Saturday 19th October 2013 during the second period of industrial action by the FBU.
Members of the FBU will walk out between 18.30 and 23.30 as a result of their national dispute with Government over their pensions.
While East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service will have fully trained and experienced crews on standby to respond to emergencies, cover will inevitably be reduced. The increased number of visitors expected present additional challenges and members of the public are asked to take extra care.
Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive Des Prichard said: “Going to an organised bonfire, procession and display can be one of the safest ways to enjoy the bonfire season. Bonfire societies have measures in place to ensure the safety of people attending their event. We urge members of the public to follow the organisers’ safety advice to the letter and be directed by the marshals on the night.
“By doing what you can to stay safe and enjoy yourself, you will be helping us to concentrate our resources where they are most needed.”
If you have other plans for this Saturday evening or are simply staying in, there is plenty that you can do to stay safe and look after your loved ones. Our Stay Safe checklists are available on our website.
For householders, our advice is clear. If you do have a fire, get out of the building, stay out and call 999.
If you are organising your own bonfire celebration and firework display in the coming weeks, make sure you follow this simple safety advice from Steve Wright, our Community Safety Team Manager.
