East Sussex Fire and Rescue has kicked off a series of activities marking National Older People’s Day and its Full of Life campaign, calling on people to stay safe in their homes.
National statistics between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 highlight the need for a more pro-active approach:
• There were 380 fire deaths in Great Britain of which 178 (47%) were among people aged 60 or above.
• 41% of fatal fires start in the living or dining room.
• More than half (52%) of all non-fatal injuries are caused by cooking appliances.

On 2nd October, Community Volunteers were at the "Good Life" event at Winter Gardens Eastbourne.
Eastbourne Borough Commander Dave Sheppard said:
“This was a great opportunity for us to meet with those living in the community we serve. We were able to provide people with information and advice. We also took requests for thirty Home Safety Visits. This is when we will come out to visit the more vulnerable members of the public in their homes. We will look at each room, point out any fire risks fire we see and offer advice about how to reduce the risk. We will also discuss whether they know how they would get out of the home if there was a fire. If it is appropriate we will fit free smoke detectors. We can even look at specialist alarms for people who may be hard of hearing.”
With the winter approaching, we are also helping with sessions to test electric blankets – a service we know is popular among older generations.
We are supporting Wealden District Council, who have arranged Electric Blanket Testing sessions.
