ESFRS offers condolences following fatal fire in Barcombe

A woman has died following a fire in Barcombe on the morning of 14 December 2013.

A call was received at 6.13am from a property in Barcombe Mills saying that a fire could be seen in the distance.

Crews from Barcombe, Uckfield and Lewes were sent to the scene and on arrival they found a two storey detached property which was well alight.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus managed to reach a woman, aged in her eighties, who was in the home. She was unresponsive and given first aid and CPR by crews until paramedics arrived. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene. No-one else was in the house.

One in seven foam and water were used to tackle the fire on the ground and first floor and in the roof. At the height of the incident 25 firefighters were there. Crews spent most of the day at the scene.

An investigation is planned but building control need to confirm it is safe to enter the property before that can take place.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is offering its condolences to the woman's family and friends.
