Firefighters remain on the scene of overnight fire in Hastings

Crews from Bohemia Road and The Ridge fire stations in Hastings remain at the scene of a serious overnight fire.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called out at 00.34 this morning (25 May 2014) to an address on Marine Parade in Hastings.

At the height of the incident 40 firefighters were involved in tackling the fire. Aerial platforms from Eastbourne and Hastings were used and crews from other fire stations were called to assist.

One woman has been taken to hospital.

A row of terraced homes and shops were affected, with some walls and room space collapsing.

Hastings Borough Commander Nigel Cusack said:
"It is obviously a distressing time for those whose homes and properties have been affected by this fire. Firefighters worked incredibly hard to limit the damage it caused and stop it spreading even further through neighbouring buildings. The fast response and operational tactics used prevented this becoming a larger scale incident. Building experts are now making the area safe so that a fire investigation can begin."

A further update will be published this evening.
