Don’t miss out on free Brighton Pride conference

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to sign up to a special conference to mark Brighton Pride.

Human rights and social justice campaigner Peter Tatchell is the key note speaker at the “We don’t talk about that” conference which takes place on Friday 1 August in the City.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Gary Ferrand said:

“This conference is aimed at helping delegates learn from others, share good practice and explore some of the more complex issues surround the Asian community. Whether you work within teams focussed on equalities, diversities and inclusion or have an personal interest – we would encourage you to come along.”

What’s happening

The day begins at 09.30, with hosts Jagtar Singh, the Asian Fire Service Authority National Officer and Gary Ferrand, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Katie Cornhill, a Station Manager from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Scott Durairaj from NHS England will be speaking about their own experiences, with Rory Smith a LGBT Case Worker from Sussex Police also taking to the podium.

The day will also include a selection of afternoon workshops and networking opportunities.

There will be workshops on the themes of:
  • “So what can I say?” – exploring the use of language, what’s appropriate and what’s not
  • “Out and Asian” – focuses on how to engage with LBGT people from the Asian Community
  • “Help me to be Trans friendly” – question and answer session about transgender issues
Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty from Brighton and Hove City Council will discuss Organisational Excellence and the event will be closed by Des Prichard, Chief Fire Officer and CEO of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
