East Sussex Fire and Rescue thanks public for messages of support

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is thanking members of the public who have sent messages of support following the Eastbourne Pier fire.

The Service has received scores of messages via email and social media.

As of 9.45am around 20 firefighters remain at the scene damping down and cutting away to ensure all hot spots are dealt with and there is no chance of re-ignition.

Chief Fire Officer Des Prichard said: "Our crews worked hard to protect a large section of Eastbourne Pier. It was a very difficult operation and the assistance of the RNLI, Coastguard and Police proved invaluable."

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Cordons remain in place around the Pier and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service will work with Sussex Police, building control and other agencies to ensure public safety.

A further update will be posted around lunchtime.
