Operation continues at Newhaven industrial site

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service remains at the site of a serious fire in Newhaven.

The service was initially called at 10.30 on the morning of Friday 5 December.

There were reports rubbish was alight at Skip It Containers on North Quay Road.

Crews attended the scene and began tackling the fire.

Due to the large amount of waste involved (an estimated 200 tones of rubbish) the operation continued throughout the night and firefighters remain in the scene today (6 December 2014).

As of 12.30, there are eight fire engines, along with the Incident Command Unit, tackling the fire.

An aerial ladder platform has been used as a water tower.

Roads in the area remain cordoned off and people are being told to avoid the area.

There are no reports of injuries.

Fire crews are expected to remain on site for the rest of the day.

A further update will be posted around 5pm.
